"[The best part of being in a band is] touring, for sure. Seeing new places and people every day ... just checking out new shit and having an overall great time."

Jeffree Star Interview

This interview is from November 18th, 2008, and though it took us a while to get up, it's definitely worth it! Check out the talk we had with the wonderful Jeffree Star, whether you like him or hate him. And if you hate him, definitely read until the end - your opinion may change entirely!

BD: Bandictionary
JS: Jeffree Star

BD: Hi, Jeffree. How are you?
JS: I'm pregnant! Yeah, we're in Arizona and it's so hot... I'm wearing my bikini.

BD: So you're on tour right now, correct? How is it going so far?
JS: It's been really good. We're finishing a couple more dates... it's gonna be really good to go home and have orgies. But otherwise, the tour has been great.

BD: What's the first thing you're going to do when you get home?
JS: Hmm... Do you have Pinkberry where you live? It's like Japanese yogurt, it's really good. It's kind of like crack. Once you have it, you want to have it every day! So I'm definitely going to have Pinkberry... and I'm going to take a real shower!

BD: What is one question you hate being asked during interviews?
JS: Pretty much everyone asks me how long it takes to get ready. It's like, I don't have like a stopwatch by my mirror! So I don't know why, but everyone always asks that.

BD: Beauty Killer will be coming out soon. What should we be expecting from that?
JS: Mostly, music that I've really spent time on so I'm really proud of it. My first two EPs are certainly fucking rad, for like getting out of the house and having fun, nothing serious, and then when it blew up and got really big, I had the opportunity to sit down with producers and make music that I actually really enjoy. Not that I don't enjoy the old stuff, but this is way more of what I want to do now.

BD: I'm sure a lot of people will be looking forward to that!
JS: Hell yeah!

BD: How would you describe your live show to someone who has never seen it before?
JS: It's like what it feels like to lose your virginity.

BD: Do you ever get tired of being the Queen of the Internet?
JS: I love it and I'm still not tired of it! I think when I get tired of myself is when I'll want to do something else. But I'm kind of the Paris Hilton of the internet world. I have so much to expand on that I don't think it will ever get boring.

BD: What's a typical day at home like for you?
JS: It depends, like right now, there's so much stuff going on, like me going and recording every day. And two months ago, I got arrested, so I'm going to have to do community service and wear an orange jumpsuit, so that's exciting. So if you want to catch a peek, just drive along the side of the freeway. I'll be picking up trash for ten days! It'll be horrifying... but it will match my hair!

BD: Obviously, your musical style is very unique, as is your appearance. Where do you draw your inspiration?
JS: Early on, I was always really into fashion magazines and the idea that with makeup, you can always change how you look, and wipe it off and be someone else. So those magazines, like, looking at all those ads and everything has always inspired me. There's never been any one person because everyone sucks.

BD: You're also a huge source of inspiration for plenty of people. What does that feel like to know that so many people look up to you?
JS: It's cool to see people who actually get the message, because there's so much positive and negative attention that it's always good to focus on positive stuff. Everyone is so quick to talk shit about me or try to shoot me down, so whenever there are people who say that I inspire them, it's really good to hear. I think everyone just likes to see lots of hate way more than positive energy because it's more "interesting". But when I go to other countries, people are way nicer. People are too conceited and rude here.

BD: Definitely. I know quite a few people who aren't willing to get past your appearance to see what a great message you're putting across about being yourself and being an individual. It's frustrating that they won't take the time out of their day to see that you're not just another internet celebrity.
JS: Yeah, I don't know why people can't just get past it. It is frustrating and it makes me have to work twice as hard, but I love working hard, so it's good.

BD: So what kinds of plans do you have for the future, both long- and short-term?
JS: Well, I'm expanding my clothing line. It's in Hot Topic, and now my shirts are going to be in Wet Seal, so, you know, a lot of eleven-year-olds will be wearing them. I'm trying to do a perfume, a makeup line... I have so much more to do!

BD: What's your ultimate goal?
JS: To be everywhere. People are paying attention to me now, but they're going to be doing that a lot more pretty soon.

BD: Are there any sorts of thoughts that keep you awake at night?
JS: Usually, before I go to bed, I can't stop thinking about how lucky I am that God blessed me and made me so beautiful. I cry at night sometimes... no, I'm just kidding. Really, though, every hour I have a different emotion. Everyone thinks I'm dramatic, but I never really like talking about my feelings with people, so at night, I just sit and reflect on everything.

BD: If you could change any one thing about the world, what would it be?
JS: I just wish that everyone wouldn't act like a piece of shit. People are always like, "Why do you take pictures vomiting?" and all this other crap, and it's like... I just think that people stop thinking in general. Everyone wants the easy way out of everything and no one wants to work hard anymore. So, I could be like Tila Tequila and have my tits out and wear a thong, or I could do something that actually makes people think, that makes them go, "Hmm, I wonder what that's about."

BD: I think that's something that a lot of people appreciate about you, that you actually provoke thought in people.
JS: Exactly, and so many people don't do that! I'd rather not be blonde and stupid.

BD: Yeah! Speaking of which, I want to mention that the blog you posted a while back about Proposition 8 was so amazing and inspirational. It was really frustrating to see so many people who were commenting on it and being so ignorant, especially after you took all the time to write about it.
JS: Yeah, I mean, there's always going to be negativity anyway, you know? Like, there are people who add me on MySpace to call me ugly all the time, which I think is really funny. But, you know, I've seen so many celebrities like Kid Rock who are like, "Well, if you're a celebrity, then you shouldn't have an opinion." Everyone should have an opinion and use it! That's the whole point. Like, Kanye West and Jay-Z support Obama and they put it into songs and made a huge deal out of it, and they inspire a million people. It inspired me to use my power and to do something with it.

BD: One last question: what kind of music have you been listening to lately? Anyone you think that everyone should be listening to?
JS: I'm really into hip-hop. I may not look like it, but that's mostly what I listen to, and there's a new female rapper that Li'l Wayne just signed to Young Money Entertainment, a subsidiary of Cash Money Records. Her name is Nicki Minaj. She's on my top 8 and you have to check her out. She's a genius! She's about to blow up - Li'l Kim is over! I actually got her to rap in one of my songs and it's so sick.

BD: Anything else you'd like to add?
JS: The world better be ready, because I'm not going anywhere.
