Gabe Saporta, formerly of Midtown, created Cobra Starship in 2005 as a side project. But once Midtown split, he pursued Cobra Starship full-time, and they have since sky-rocketed in popularity. Cobra is consisted of Victoria "Vicky-T" Asher (keytar), Ryland Blackinton (guitar), Alex Suarez (bass), and Nate Novarro (drums) in addition to Gabe Saporta, who is the band's vocalist. Cobra is probably best-known for their collaborative effort, "Bring It (Snakes on a Plane)", which includes Cobra Starship, William Beckett (The Academy Is...), Travis McCoy (Gym Class Heroes), Maja Ivarsson (The Sounds), and Nick Wheeler (The All-American Rejects). The song was featured on the Snakes On A Plane soundtrack, and soon after, the band started gaining a considerable fan-base.
"Bring It" was included on their first album, While the City Sleeps, We Rule The Streets, which was released in the fall of 2006. After touring quite a bit and finalizing their line-up, Cobra Starship recorded their second album, ¡Viva La Cobra!, which was produced by Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump. Also, in early 2008, Cobra Starship was featured on MTV as the "artist of the week", which also helped boost their popularity and shoved them into a more mainstream fan-base.
Cobra Starship is closely associated with their label-mates Fall Out Boy, The Academy Is..., and so on, and they're often seen together in "webisodes" and podcasts together. Ryland Blackinton is also known as "Guy Ripley", a fictional worldwide news reporter, and he has appeared in numerous episodes of The Academy Is...' podcast, TAI TV. After their first headlining tour, the "Really, Really Ridiculously Good Looking Tour" and a few international tours, the band signed onto the 2008 Vans Warped Tour. Right now, Cobra is on the Vans Warped Tour and will be headlining the "Sassy Back" tour with Forever the Sickest Kids, Hit the Lights, and Sing it Loud this fall.
